ssGreat Britain

The ssGreat Britain was first launched in Bristol in 1843.  She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Britain’s greatest engineer, who revolutionised Victorian society and shaped our modern world by transforming world travel.

Between 1843 and 1886 the ssGreat Britain  travelled nearly one million miles in its thirty-two times around the world.

She was abandoned in the Falkland Islands, in 1937 and brought back to Bristol in 1970.  She is conserved in the dry dock where she was originally built.

The ssGreat Britain is Brunel’s only surviving ship and is now a multi award-winning museum and visitor attraction in Bristol.
